Accident kills 4, injures 20 in Ibadan

Three passengers lost their lives at dawn on Sunday, while 15 others were seriously injured in a fatal motor accident which occurred at Awolowo junction, along U.I.-Secretariat road in Ibadan, Oyo State, when two buses collided with each other.


The vehicles involved were a Toyota bus with registration number AJ 91 MNY and Volkswagen bus with registration number LSR 945 XH, both of which were said to be commercial vehicles.

The driver of one of the buses was reported to have been coming from U.I. end of the road while the other one was approaching from Secretariat end and was turning into Awolowo road towards Sango area when the accident occurred at about 6a.m.

Nigerian Tribune learnt that the three casualties died on the spot while 15 others with varying degrees of injury were rushed to the Accident and Emergency unit of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.

In a similar incident which occurred on Saturday at about 7p.m., a vehicle ran over six persons at Agbowo area along Ojoo-Iwo Road Expressway killing a lady named Rashidat Oladele, said to be selling mobile phone recharge cards by the roadside instantly.

According to information gathered by the Nigerian Tribune, a Nissan Primera saloon car with registration number FST 689 BZ and other vehicles were coming from Ojoo end and heading towards Iwo road when a yet-to-be-identified vehicle suddenly overtook the Primera car which was on the service lane and came sharply into its lane.

As the driver of the Primera car, whose name was given as Fatai Adeniran, tried to avoid collision with the vehicles, it swerved and ran over the people by the roadside, claiming one casualty instantly.

The injured were reportedly rushed to Hamdala Hospital, Agbowo for medical treatment while the remains of the decease were deposited at the mortuary at State Hospital, Yemetu-Adeoyo, Ibadan.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations confirmed the two incidents, saying that the driver of the Primera car had been taken into custody at Kajorepo police station and the vehicle recovered for inspection by the Vehicle Inspection Office.

She added that the two buses in the accident at Awolowo junction had also been taken to Bodija Housing police station.
