Thugs resurfaced at Dugbe market in Ibadan

Hell was let lose at Dugbe Alawo Market, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Friday as hoodlums unleashed terror on the community, shooting and using other weapons freely.

Numbering about 10, the bandits invaded the market about 1:00 p.m. terrorising traders and carting away their wares after scaring them off.

It took the intervention of the convoys of Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State and his Imo State counterpart, Chief Rochas Okorocha, to dislodge them and bring sanity back to the area.

While the pandemonium lasted, traders in the vicinity hurriedly closed their shops to avoid their wares being looted.

A statement issued later by the Special Adviser to the Governor Ajimobi on Media, Dr. Festus Adedayo, said that initial information indicated that the pandemonium was caused by two rival factions of the road transport union.

Governors Ajimobi and Okorocha were on their way to the Rochas Okorocha Foundation along the NTC Road, Ibadan, when they heard gunshots from the adjoining market area and stepped in to restore order.

The governors’ escorts were said to have dislodged the hoodlums before sending for reinforcements from the police headquarters and the state’s crime-fighting outfit, Operation Burst.

Some of the traders who were bold enough to resurface after the hoodlums had been chased away informed Governor Ajimobi that the hoodlums were from the Ogunpa side of the market.

The governor was also told that the hoodlums had become a torn in the flesh of the traders in the area, as they used to extort money from the traders.

After peace had been restored to the area, the governor used the opportunity to warn perpetrators of violence to steer clear of the state, stressing that his administration would not tolerate any act of violence.

He also ordered the police to fish out the hoodlums.
