2015 Tinz: Ajimobi is now spraying money

20140816_174615At the outset of his administration, Oyo state governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi was reputed for his intolerance for what we are used to in Ibadan – spraying money. But as we gradually approach next year general elections, the governor may have listened to the clarion call and is now ready to open the state purse and make it rain.

Ajimobi I guess is aware that the battle of 2015 will not entirely be won by his performance or malls, it would be won by the person that either rigs most (although this is getting more difficult each day) or gets across to the people.

He also has lessons to learn from Fayemi’s loss in Ekiti and Ogbeni’s victory in Osun state. Personally, I see Ajimobi somewhere in between these two personalities although he was leaning towards Fayemi’s style before.

Ibadan politics and by extension, that of Oyo state, will definitely be interesting. Even as the incumbent state governor, Ajimobi is going to the polls probably as a underdog and every strategy would be deployed to ensure victory next year. Starting with spending money.

This morning, I heard the state governor yesterday announced salary increment in the salaries of the state’s civil servants. He said this while addressing the workers who queued to board the state’s free-for-staff-but-not-free-for-Paul transport buses.

Although he said the decision was sequel to his meeting with the executives of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), we all know he is just trying to get them on his side and not make more enemies.

But I believe in addition to the workers, he needs to do something concrete for the  average man and woman on the street. Such largesse should be so significant that the residents would readily turn down overtures from the opposition who are very much ready to outspend the state government
