studentsOyo state government has announced it has paid the fees owed the West African Examination Council (WAEC) which led to the council refusing to release the results of students of public secondary schools in Oyo state that participated in the last May/June examinations in the state.

Speaking yesterday in Ibadan, the state commissioner for education, Dr. S. O. Olaniyonu, said since 2011, the state government has paid about NGN2 billion as fees for public secondary school students in the state. He urged parents and students that sat the last exams to go and check their results online.

It would be recalled that IBPulse.com exclusively reported the government had failed to pay the WAEC fees of the students some of whom complained they may miss the admission exercises in some universities including Obafemi Awolowo University and the University of Ilorin.

Ugwu Anthony accused the state government of not feeling concerned about the plight of the students.

He told IBPulse.com: “Oyo state govt. are seemingly not bothered by this happening. if it were a serious leader, he would av tried as much as possible to balance his debt even before the results were released. some of my friends in unilorin av no hope again cuz deadline for d submission of SSCE result is over.”

The student of Oladipo Alayande School of Science said he was highly embittered with the unwholesome event.

“If it were a country with serious students, we would have been protesting by now. but we are all here waiting in doubt… and these are such little things that encumber Nigeria’s development.”

Also commenting, Alabi Idowu slammed the state government for setting a bad record.

“It is a bad record that Oyo state is owing WAEC money for them to release our result.”

Ayoade Sodeeq said resolving the crisis was more important than the recently held collection of permanent voter card in the state.

“[Paying our WAEC fee] is very important than voter card. We really need it because people are ready to go school but WAEC result is delaying many students in Oyo state,” Sodeeq told IBPulse.com.
