TEDxBodija 2014 – How it all went down

20141018_105102From the time I had a one-on-one discussion with Femi Babalowise, the curator of TEDxBodija, I knew the 2014 edition would be cooler than last year. And on several aspects I was right.

This year, the event was sponsored by the Oyo state government.

Although the event was scheduled to kick off at 9am, it didn’t because few people were in the hall and only one speaker was around. So we had to just chill, bounce to the lovely music tunes that were served by the very good DJ, interact with familiar faces and make new friends.

By the way, I saw so many loyal readers of IBPulse.com at the event, thanks for the loyalty.

Back to the matter.

When the show finally kicked off, the dancers set the tune and I knew right away we were going to have a very nice time. From one speaker to another we explored different concept through the various speakers with interjections from the audience who cheered, laughed and murmured at various moments of the event.

The event was hosted by the beautiful Splash FM’s on-air personality Ronke Giwa (read my interview with her here); we also had Kemi Olunloyo in the house.

Unlike last year’s’ edition when some speakers decided to deliver lectures, TEDxBodija 2014 was a proper TEDx event. Even though the hall wasn’t entirely filled at the outset of the program, it was filled up minutes after the show started.

The high point of the event was the live painting of Nelson Mandela’s portrait. Watch the short video here

There were participants from within and outside the city including distant locations like Lagos and Port Harcourt. The debate over the decision of the organisers to host TEDxBodija outside Bodija was also brought to the fore as the guy from Port Harcourt shared his ordeal when trying to find Nu Streams Conference Center in Bodija area.

For next year, I believe the organisers should strive to hold it at a location in Bodija just to test the response. Serving some snacks would also make sense considering the fact that some of us were there from 9am till 3.

But on the overall, TEDxBodija 2014 was a  phenomenal success but they should strive to make it even bigger next year.
