The maiden edition of the Niyi Osundare International Poetry Festival kicked off today (Tuesday) in Ibadan, it continues (and will end) tomorrow.
The opening ceremony reportedly had in attendance popular lawyer, and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Femi Falana, as chairman. Scholars such as UI Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Adewole; Prof. Femi Osofisan and Prof. Abdurasheed Na’Allah played different roles during the opening ceremony.
One of the major programmes, however, is a symposium titled ‘Poetry; Slice of Nature and Embodiment of Culture’, respectively had Osofisan and Prof. Remi Raji-Oyelade as chairman and lead presenter. Discussants included Prof. Isidore Diala, Dr. Niran Malaolu, Dr. Sola Olorunyomi and Jumoke Verissimo.
This was followed by poetry performances, while the varsity’s Theatre Arts Department staged Osundare’s play, ‘The State Visit’, in the evening. This is being coordinated by Prof. Segun Ojewuyi, Prof. Hyginus Ekwuazi and Dr. Tunde Awosanmi.
Tomorrow (Wednesday), there will be another symposium titled ‘The Essentials of Niyi Osundare’s Poetry, reading and performances, while secondary school students will also interact with Osundare.
