This year, the May Day falls on a Friday, so we are treated to a whole three days off work (including the weekend). If you are visiting Ibadan and you are at loss on what to do to keep the long weekend spiced up, don’t worry! You won’t have to remain bored in your hotel rooms, Nkem Ndem Vivienne, Travel/Technology Writer, Jovago, presents you with five interesting ways you could occupy the long weekend.

Explore the sights and sounds of Ibadan. Mostly referred to as the Ancient City, Ibadan has a undeniable wealth of history, culture and art. There is so much for you to see and record in pictures. There is the museum in the building of the Institute of African Studies, which exhibits several remarkable pre-historic bronze carvings and statues. The city also has a zoological garden located inside the University of Ibadan, and a botanical garden located at Agodi. Other attractions include: The Bower Memorial Tower to the east on  Oke Aàre (Aare’s Hill); Cocoa House, the first skyscraper in Africa; Mapo Hall -the colonial style city hall- perched on top of a hill; “Oke Mapo,” Mapo Hill; the Trans-Wonderland amusement park; the cultural centre Mokola; and Liberty Stadium, the first stadium in Africa. Again, you might want to visit the first citadel of higher learning, University of Ibadan (formerly the University College of Ibadan), and the first teaching hospital in Nigeria, University College Hospital, UCH. The best method to move about the city is to use reference points and notable landmarks.

Sign up for the Ibadan Start-up Weekend event. A 3-day event holding from the 1st of May to the 3rd, it is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. You do not need to be a designer, coder or even a healthcare professional to join; the only requirement is curiosity. In addition to a great weekend full of entrepreneurial activity, participants will receive: fun participant SWAG! , food and drink to fuel your entire weekend and prizes for the winners of the final pitch. Rather than just lying on your bed or doing something equally mundane, you have a chance to put yourself in the shoes of an entrepreneur and have possibly the best weekend of your life!

Enjoy a game of Polo at Ibadan Polo Club

This year’s Ibadan Polo Tourney may been concluded for the year, but there is no reason why you should not have fun at the Ibadan Polo Club. The Ibadan Polo Club, one of the finest recreation centres in the city, is located on the Dugbe-Eleyele axis of the city and it shares fence with the popular Mokola Barracks. The polo club house serves as one of the Ibadan elite’ fun zones, where both members and non-members could relax as there is a kitchen that serves good delicacies within the club house and a bar where chilled drinks could be grabbed. You do not necessarily need to get on a horse, all you need to do is sit, relax and watch the experts do their thing!

Watch a movie at Cinema. There are two popular cinemas in Ibadan: The Filmhouse Cinema at Ventura Mall, along Sango UI road, Samonda, Ibadan and Viva Entertainment Cinema, Palms Mall Ring Road Ibadan. Although Film House will give your more options as per movies to see, both are equipped to show current releases in 3D. Take time out to see the newest movies in the box office on a wide screen. Also, if you are the gregarious type, you stand a chance of making new friends, as the cinemas are always full. Some of the movies currently showing include: Avengers: Age of Ultron, Project Almanac,Top Five, Fast & Furious 7, as well as Nigerian movie -beautiful liars. The good thing about going to these cinemas is that they are located in ultra-modern malls with corners from where you can possibly grab a drink after the movie or have delectable meals.

Buy a ticket for the Spartacus Comedy Show. It can never go wrong with comedy, especially in Ibadan. The show holding at Le Chateau on May 3rd is an excellent way to spice up the long weekend. Hosted by local celebrity Mc Rapindady and featuring quite a number of popular comedians for just N1,000 (regular) and N3,000 (VIP), it is certainly a win-win.
