Parents will now pay school fees and for WAEC exams in Oyo state
The Abiola Ajimobi-led government in Oyo state has decided to end the regime of paying WAEC fees for students in the state. It is also taking it further by reintroducing school fees in the state.
According to the state government, the fees are meant to complement government’s effort at improving the infrastructure of public secondary schools.
In a circular signed by Oyo state Head of Service, Soji Eniade, the government said with effect from the 2015/2016 academic session, the State Government would stop any further payment of WAEC registration fees due to the current financial status of the state.
I know the politicians are going to sensationalize this as usual but the truth is that this action is long overdue considering the fact that government spends billions on WAEC fees and the public schools are in dilapidated mode. Furthermore, Oyo state is constantly among the states that are owing WAEC!
But the question now is what happens to the money that the government was using to pay the fees – and how do we ensure that the state of the schools improve significantly?
