Oyo state is the most secure and peaceful state in Nigeria – Army
The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, Ibadan, Maj-Gen. Laz Ilo, has described Oyo State as the most secure and peaceful in the country.
The GOC, who gave the assessment in his remarks during the decoration of newly-promoted senior army officers at the Army Officers’ Mess, Agodi, Ibadan, attributed the feat to the priority attention accorded security by the state governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi.
Judging by his experience and working relationship with the governor in the past two years, he said the pervading security in the state had attracted foreign investors who considered the state a safe haven for their investments.
Ilo said: “As Commander of the Operation Burst (state joint security outfit), there was hardly any request I brought to the governor on behalf of the team that he never obliged. He is a man that puts the highest priority on the security of the state.
“Today, it is not an overstatement to say that Oyo State, unarguably, is the most secured state, not only in the South-west, but in the country. You can see the inflow of foreign direct investment and development of the state in the last few years.
“I want to assure the governor that 2 Division under my watch will give its utmost to the security of the state. Oyo State is a familiar ground for me and the governor has been like an egbon (brother) to me. I thank the governor for honouring the newly-promoted officers with his presence.”
In his reaction, the Governor Abiola Ajimobi expressed gratitude to the security operatives in the state for working round the clock to secure its length and breadth, describing the GOC as a dedicated and extremely humble officer in spite of his high ranking.
Ajimobi attributed the country’s sustained democracy in the last 16 years to the high level of professionalism displayed by senior army officers now occupying command and leadership positions, majority of whom he said were highly educated.
The governor restated his commitment to the sustenance of the pervading peace and security in the state, with a firm pledge to continue to strengthen the operations of the state’s joint security outfit for optimal performance.
The governor said: “The Army is playing a major role in ensuring that we have security and peace in Oyo State. The inclusion of the Army in Operation Burst added fillip to its operations and its redoubtable status among the people of the state.
“I must commend the Nigerian Army for ensuring that we are now having well-read, well-grounded and extremely intelligent officers. I doubt if we can have coup again because all the officers are well read and are respectful of the sanctity of the Constitution.
“I’m particularly delighted to see that almost all the officers being decorated with their new ranks today have master’s degree, some have multiple master’s degrees, even one holds a Ph.D in Mathematics! You are a pride to the Nigerian Army. You are a pride to Nigeria and we are proud of you.”
