Despite order, markets still open at Ile-Ife [PICTURES]
As required by tradition, the demise of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, was heralded, among other things, by the closure of all markets in the city as a sign of honor for the departed monarch.
But I was shocked when I visited the city on Sunday and I saw that serious activities were ongoing at the city’s major markets that I was opportune to visit. I asked people around and the response I got was that “won’t market eat again because the king died?”
In their support though, I found out that the main entrance to the market was shut but the market people were trading in front of the gate – so I guess they somehow obeyed the directive.
