IBPulse.com exclusively reported in March that the senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly was set to dump the All Progressives Congress (APC) in order to contest the forthcoming gubernatorial elections. He also categorically told newsmen he was no longer a member of the APC.
Indications of his preparedness to leave APC first emerged last year following a protracted discord between the senator and Gov.Abiola Ajimobi who has already expressed intention to contest for a second term and looks set to get the party’s ticket.
It would be recalled that the senator contested with Ajimobi for the party’s gubernatorial ticket during the last general elections. After Ajimobi emerged winner, party members said Lanlehin was pacified by the leaders in the party and was told to wait till 2015.
“It is obvious that he wants to leave the party if he is not given the governorship ticket and everyone is aware that Accord Party is his best choice. He cannot go to PDP because there is a long list of possible candidates there. But at Accord, he stands a better chance since Rasheed Ladoja is still in search of a political victory in the state,” an APC party member told IBPulse.com over the weekend.
On the impact the senator’s exit could have on the party in Oyo state, the member said it is already causing internal frictions within the party.
He said: “I think members of the party are at crossroads over how it should play out. On one end we have those that believe Gov. Abiola Ajimobi deserves second term and on the other end are people that believe the governor, if given the ticket, will not at the poll causing the party to lose the very important state.”
For the later group, he said Lanlehin will be the ideal candidate for the party.
