WAEC releases May/June results, withholds results of 13 states
The West African Examination Council (WAEC) this afternoon officially released the results of candidates who participated in the May/June examinations. It however said it is withholding the results of candidates in 13 states where the governments are owing the examination body.
I was expecting to see the list of the state governments that are owing WAEC but the examination body said it doesn’t want to release the list and politicians would politicize the whole matter. So I guess we will have to wait till tomorrow when candidates can begin to check their results. Let’s see if Oyo state will be on that list.
For the sake of the candidates, I hope not. But looking at the fact that the results of candidates during last year’s exams were withheld by WAEC since the state governmeent owed the examination body. After IBPulse broke this news, the state government responded, paid WAEC and the results were subsequently released. However, IBPulse’s analysis of the results showed only 19% of candidates from the state passed making – the worst in southwest region of thee country, making it one of the worst results in the history of the state.
Many of the candidates who spoke to IBPulse blamed the refusal of the state government to pay WAEC as the major reason for the dismal performance.
