Lassa fever is officially in Oyo state – 2 confirmed cases, 1 death
The Nigerian Center for Disease Control (NCDC) has revealed that it has confirmed 2 cases of Lassa fever in Oyo state in 2019. According to the NCDC, one person died from the outbreak in the state.
In its 2019 Lassa fever outbreak situation report, NCDC said the cases were reported in Oyo state between January 28 to February 03, 2019. A total of 68 new cases were confirmed within this period across the country.
The cases confirmed in Oyo state increased the number of states with confirmed cases of Lassa fever in 2019 to 19. They are Edo, Ondo, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Ebonyi, Plateau, Taraba, FCT, Adamawa, Gombe, Kaduna, Kwara, Benue, Rivers, Kogi, Enugu, Imo, Delta and Oyo. A total of 53 local governments have so far been affected.
Furthermore, 4 new healthcare workers were affected in Edo State. A total of nine health care workers have been affected since the onset of the outbreak in four States – Ebonyi (1), Ondo (2), Enugu (1) and Edo (5) with one death in Enugu.
Since the onset of the 2019 outbreak, there have been 57 deaths in confirmed cases. Case fatality rate in confirmed cases is 20.7%
