Oyo lawmakers embark on strike
A total of 20 members of the Oyo State House of Assembly have embarked on strike to protest against the failure of the state government to pay their salaries and allowances for three months.
IBPulse gathered that during the commencement of proceedings of legislative activities on Thursday, only 13 out of the 33 elected members were present and those that attended were those that occupy various leadership positions in the assembly – the speaker, heads of committees, majority and minority leaders, chief whip and others.
Commenting on the development, the Speaker of the House, Hon. Michael Adeyemo said the aggrieved lawmakers ought to have expressed their concerns using proper means instead of dissociating themselves from legislative activities that they were elected to perform.
The minority leader, Olagunju Ojo, also chided the lawmakers for not informing their colleagues of their decision.
“This case of non-payment of salaries and allowances is affecting all of us and not just them,” he said.
